The ambiguity of the term beauty can never be over emphasized. A lot has been chartered about beauty and the term has been used in various expressions. No wonder philosophers often vehemently aver “what is beauty?” As simple and straightforward this question seems to appear, proffering satisfactory answer to it is not a Child’s play.
Before I venture into the crux of the subject it is imperative to clear the grass on what beauty really encompasses.
Beauty as we all know is the quality of being physically attractive. When a certain phenomenon delight the senses or excite pleasure we say that such a thing is beautiful. That is to say we can’t say something or someone is beautiful if we have not experience such thing. Beauty goes with experience. For us to say that something is beautiful, we must be able to make use of our sense organs to observe it and testify. Suffice it to say, If we don’t have a firsthand experience about a certain phenomenon we can’t adequately or properly say that such thing is beautiful or not. We can infer at this point that since our taste or view for beautiful things is most at times individualistic, therefore beauty is a subjective notion. What might be attractive and appealing to you might be unappealing and unattractive to someone else.
Let’s pause here in our exploration of the concept beauty and take a keen look at the nucleus of the subject.
“Can we make beauty or maintain beauty?”
Obviously, we all are created by a creator. The manner He creates us is exactly the way we are. It is we humans who define who and what is beautiful and what characteristic there is in a person that make such a person beautiful. Beauty has conspicuously been misconstrue by virtually all and sundry. It is transparent that the world has been encroached upon by science and technology leading to the production of sophisticated, effective and suitable apparatus for beautification. I’m sure you are not new to the term “artificial beauty”. When an individual extravagantly utilizes sophisticated beautification apparatus to transform him/herself we tagged it artificial beauty. Most times when you consciously alter your body in any manner, you are trying to fix some so called abnormalities.
Have you been ridiculed or make fun of because of the nature of your physical properties? May be you were told that your eyes are as big as a cat; your ears are stick up as that of a rabbit, or you look shapeless and the likes. How did you feel? What was your reaction? What was your response?
Frankly speaking, a perfectionist will feel embarrass, unease and incomplete. These sets of human species are often enveloped with the desire to perfect themselves in all ramifications. In fact, they are the type that avers vehemently that beauty can be made. Most celebrities, superstars and wealthy folks fall under this category. They get themselves soaked up in trying to fix every abnormality in their physical appearance through a medium known as Plastic Surgery all in the name of getting themselves beautifully beautiful. From tummy tucks to face-lifts to breast argumentation, millions of people are undergoing cosmetic surgery to maintain their youthful appearance. Some of such plastic surgery includes Rhinoplasty (Nose job done to improve the appearance of the nose), Thighplasty (A thigh and buttock lift), and Liposuction etc. You will agree with me that all these cosmetic and aesthetic surgery do not only burn a hole in your pocket, they also have their side effects. Come to think of the pain you undergo during the process, the risk you are getting yourself into. Are they really worth it? You eventually become a slave to yourself and the plastic surgery. You keep responding to medication time to time. Suffice it to say that failure to adhere to the surgical terms and conditions can put your health at further risk or cost you your life.
On a serious note, who the hell do plastic surgeons think they are? Do they think they are God or what? They are bunch of average technocrats with bad taste who are selling and putting as much drug as possible to and in human beings all in the name of making them look beautiful.
Do you think you can cheat nature? See what happened to this young friend of mine called Simon.
I could remember a friend of mine during my days in high school called Simon. Simon is this popular and dark cute guy whose charisma is been felt among all and sundry in school. His talent in singing, dancing and acting is out of this world and this generates as much fame as possible for him. But he was dark in complexion and wasn’t happy about it. This led people to nickname him “charcoal”. Surprisingly, after a long vacation, every tom, dick and harry returned to school only to discover a sudden transformation in Simon’s complexion from dark to light. Obviously, Simon was now happy and confident about his new looks. But guess what happen, few months later, nature took it course and Simon color returned to its original state with some deficiency. It then dawn on him that no matter how hard you try, how long it might last just be aware that nature can never be cheated.
Something to think about!
It is not out of context to ask this logical question “How can we sustain beauty if we don’t have beauty?” Definitely we can’t sustain what we don’t have. We only sustain what we already have right! The reason why some people believe that beauty can be made is because they lack the intrinsic conception of what constitute beauty. The truth is that until you have a better understanding of beauty you will continuously be a slave to beauty. I’m not ignorant of the fact that people undergo cosmetic surgery because they face (BBD) Body Dysmorphic Disorder and some want to feel more confident and better about themselves. They want to have a better life where other people would admire them for their looks instead of talking about their ugliness. Well, I can’t dispute the fact that these helps the psychological aspect of the patient as these result may help the person live a happier life as worries about not being accepted by the society because of appearance may be eliminated. However, for some other people, plastic surgery seems to be like just another escapade to achieve instant gratification.
My dear reader, people should realized that they do not need plastic surgery to make themselves beautiful or to validate them as beautiful folks. Though it is crystal clear that the aging process gives wrinkly and saggy skin, but the truth remain that it is part of life, something that God has preordained in the first place. Moreover, if you are considering cosmetic surgery and are willing to spend money on it just because you are not happy with your body or you want to slow down the process of aging. Did you ever stop to think about the millions of children out there who actually need reconstructive surgery but cannot afford it? What about those whose body are burnt and are scarred for life and kids who are born with cleft lips? My friend, cosmetic surgery, make beauty or artificial beauty should not be more important than valuing natural looks or beauty.
Quit on quick fixes and embrace natural beauty and natural signs of aging instead of having a perfect body so called with a burnt pocket.
