Graduate Job Search Tips
In
searching for a job as a graduate, there are key and central points you
have to take into consideration. Job hunt is not a child’s play. In
some point, you seems to be frustrated, worn-out and fed up. Should that
be the case? I don’t think so! See what you have to do.
1. Start now
Even if you feel swamped by projects,
and exams, set aside time each day (or week) to look for jobs. Knowing
you have job security will make your days off even sweeter!
2. Customize your resume
A one-size -fits-all resume and cover
letter does not work. No matter how proud you are of your minor in
Modern Dance, it does not make sense to include it in your cover letter
(unless the skill is specifically asked for) when applying for a
Research Scientist position.
3. Select carefully
Don’t apply for every job you see, but spend time applying for jobs you actually want.
4. Do a social media clean-up
Remove unbecoming photos of you at
last week’s party. You want to appear professional in all your social
media appearances, as this can improve your chance of being hired.
5. Practice!
Practice makes perfect. Stand in front
of a mirror, and “tell me about yourself.” Think about how you would
answer the questions, “What are your strengths,” “What are your
weaknesses,” and “Why do you want to work here?” If English is not your
native-language, keep practicing speaking out loud so that you will
be more articulate when the day comes. Watch TV, read books, listen to
the radio — all ways to strengthen your communication and comprehension
skills.
6. Don’t give up
It can be very disheartening to
receive rejection after rejection, or to hear nothing at all. Don’t give
up — job searches are tough. If you need help to re-evaluate your job
search process, we are here to help.
